Procedures & qualification¶
What may be welded, how, by whom, and the evidence that the procedure is qualified.
Material & consumable approval matrix¶
Controlled master
The controlled master is the file on the IDM server in the welding management system folder structure. Download it here; the text below is a convenience rendering of the same document. Where the two differ, the server file governs.
| Material & Consumable Approval Matrix | WMS-C-09 |
|---|---|
The definitive statement of which parent material and filler combinations IDM may weld. A combination not listed here is not weldable at IDM, whatever a drawing says, until it is added by the RWC.

| Austenitic stainless Gr 8.1 (304/304L) | TIG 141 | Butt (pipe) | ISO 14343-A: W 19 12 3 L | IDM-SS-03 | WPQR/TUV/24198/RS | [TBC] |
| Mild steel to cast iron | [TBC] | — | Pure nickel | NONE | NONE | NO |
The mild steel to cast iron row is recorded as NOT APPROVED. It appears on the Alstom 24308 estimate headed "Trial #2", which implies a Trial #1. Establish what was welded on Trial #1 and where it went. Nothing further is welded in that combination until the RWC has qualified a procedure and qualified the welders, or formally excluded it.
The reference does not tell you the joint type
WPS-IDM-CS-01 is a fillet procedure, despite carrying no suffix, and WPS-IDM-CS03-BW and WPS-IDM-SS01-BW cover fillets as well as butts. The BW and FW suffixes are IDM's naming, not the scope of the procedure. This matrix was corrected on 20 September 2026 against the WPS documents themselves; the previous version had CS-01 and CS-02 the wrong way round. The full ranges are in the WPS register (WMS-D-01).
Filler designations are taken from the WPS documents. Verify the trade name and batch against the consumable certificate at the point of use — the WPS names Bluerange MIG 1.2 (carbon, MAG), ESAB Filarc PZ6500 (carbon, TIG) and ELGA Cromatig 316L (stainless, TIG), each "or equivalence".
IDM-SS-03 is listed because three welders hold a current qualification against it, but it is not one of IDM's six production procedures and its approval status has not been determined. [TBC — RWC]
