WI-02 · Allocating a welder

A certificate is not a qualification. The continuity confirmations are what keep it alive.

  1. Check the welder holds the WPS this job needs. Coverage is on the WPS / WPQR / welder coverage matrix (WMS-C-10) — live in this portal. If the WPS you need is not on that matrix, it is not weldable at IDM; stop and raise it with the Responsible Welding Coordinator.
  2. Then check the joint. Holding a certificate against a WPS is not the same as being qualified for the joint in front of you. A butt qualification does not cover fillet welds unless the supplementary fillet test was done. Read the welder's designation in the welder qualification register (WMS-D-03) and match it to the joint — process, product type, weld type, material group, thickness, diameter and position. If the designation does not cover it, the answer is no, and only the Responsible Welding Coordinator can determine otherwise.
  3. Check the certificate has not expired — and check the BS EN ISO 9606-1 clause 9.2 continuity confirmations are signed and current. A certificate with unsigned confirmations is not valid, whatever the expiry date says.
  4. If a confirmation is overdue, that welder does not do that work until the RWC resolves it.
  5. Record the allocation on the weld map (WMS-E-02) — Job Pack section 2.
  6. If the internal Welding Coordinator is one of the welders on this job, write the name of the independent inspector on the same form now, not later. The coordinator cannot inspect a weld he made.

Where to look

What you need Where it is
Who can weld to which WPS WPS / WPQR / welder coverage matrix (WMS-C-10) — live in this portal
Certificate numbers, ranges and expiry dates Welder qualification register (WMS-D-03) — live in this portal
Continuity position WMS-C-07 continuity and prolongation records, 02 Personnel / 01 on the IDM server
Who is competent to do what, and when it was last confirmed Training & competence matrix (WMS-D-10) — live in this portal
Which welder ID stamp belongs to whom The identification printed on each certificate is in WMS-D-03. The separate allocation record (WMS-C-08) is out of date

Read this before you allocate anybody

As things stand, no welder at IDM may be allocated to certified work. Every current certificate runs to 2027 or 2028, and every one of them has blank BS EN ISO 9606-1 clause 9.2 continuity confirmation boxes. The first six-monthly window fell due in March 2026. Under clause 9.2 the confirmation is what keeps the certificate alive, so the 2028 date confirms nothing on its own.

This is not a paperwork problem you can work around. It is resolved by the Responsible Welding Coordinator signing the confirmations — see WI-06 and the escalation already raised with IDM. Until then, welding continues only on work that is not being offered as certified, and that decision is the RWC's to record, not yours.

The register now carries every certificate number and the full BS EN ISO 9606-1 designation, transcribed from the certificates themselves. Use them.
