00 System Manual and Control / 01 FPC and Welding Quality Manual

1. Purpose and scope

This manual describes the methods for controlling welding and related activities at IDM Engineering (Chester) Ltd so that components are fabricated and welded in accordance with the client specification and/or contract and with the requirements of the standards listed below. It is the factory production control (FPC) spine for IDM’s welded products and is read in conjunction with the IDM ISO 9001 quality management system.

  • BS EN ISO 3834-2 — comprehensive quality requirements for fusion welding (the welding-QMS core).
  • BS EN 1090-1 / -2 — factory production control, conformity assessment and execution of steel structures (adds FPC, Declaration of Performance and UKCA/CE marking).
  • BS EN 15085-2 — welding of railway vehicles and components, provisionally CL2 (adds weld performance classes, weld mapping and EN 15085-5 documentation).

Shared spine. ISO 3834-2 is the common welding-QMS core; EN 1090 and EN 15085 each add a product-specific layer on top of it. Requirements are therefore established once and shared, avoiding duplicate procedures and paperwork. Where EN 15085-2 CL2 applies, ISO 3834-2 (Comprehensive) is mandated regardless of the EN 1090 Execution Class.

Material scope is currently carbon-steel-led, with stainless steel as a secondary material for which qualification evidence already exists. Aluminium is deferred. No other parent material or filler combination is within scope. Where a contract requires a combination outside this scope — including dissimilar joints such as steel to cast iron — it is referred to the RWC at technical review and no welding proceeds until a qualified procedure and qualified welders are in place. [TBC — see draft items]

Relationship to the ISO 9001 system

Many welding quality inputs and outputs are delivered through the ISO 9001 procedures. The relationship between the ISO 3834-2 clauses and the IDM ISO 9001 procedures is:
