12. Inspection and testing

Inspection and test requirements are identified at the technical review and included on job cards or, where required, in a project-specific ITP, implemented at the appropriate frequency, location and stage.

  • Before welding: welder qualification validity; WPS suitability; identity of parent material and consumables; joint preparation; fit-up, jigging and tacking; special WPS requirements; suitability of working conditions.
  • During welding: essential parameters (current, voltage, travel speed), pre-heat/interpass temperature, cleaning and shape of runs, back-gouging, weld sequence, consumable handling, distortion control and intermediate checks — recorded on a Weld Surveillance Sheet.
  • After welding: visual inspection (100% on all contracts), NDT, destructive testing, dimensional inspection and records of post-weld operations — recorded on job cards, dimensional and NDT reports and, where required, a final documentation pack.

Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), where required, is confirmed at the technical review, carried out by an approved sub-contractor with calibrated equipment, and recorded on a heat-treatment chart for the documentation pack. Inspection and test status is identified via job cards and, where applicable, the ITP.
