4. Technical review¶
The technical review is recorded in the job folder by the welding coordinator at placement of the customer’s purchase order. It provides the conditional logic that determines how much of the documentation pack is required, so the pack is streamlined and fit for purpose. The review considers, but is not limited to:
- Parent material(s) specification and welded joint properties.
- Quality and acceptance requirements for welds.
- Location, accessibility and sequence of welds, including access for inspection and NDT.
- Specification of welding, NDT and heat-treatment procedures, and the approach to procedure qualification.
- Qualification of personnel; selection, identification and traceability of materials and welds.
- Quality-control arrangements, including any independent inspection body; inspection and testing; sub-contracting.
- Post-weld heat treatment and any special requirements (consumable batch testing, ferrite content, hydrogen control, backing, peening, surface finish, weld profile).
- Joint preparation and completed-weld dimensions; welds made in the workshop or elsewhere; environmental conditions; handling of non-conformances.
Bank of codings and WPSs. The technical review references IDM’s available welder codings and qualified WPSs, so that at tender/enquiry stage it is clear what is already covered and what is not. Where a gap exists, the welding coordinator is engaged from the front end of the job — preventing work reaching the workshop before the required WPSs and qualifications are in place.
Controlled copy. The controlled master of every document in this system is the
file held on the IDM server in the welding management system folder structure. This portal is a
controlled view of it. Where the two differ, the server file governs.
